Defining your blog’s core purpose is a super useful way to to nail down exactly what you and your blog stand for.

By setting your blog’s core purpose you will have something that will guide and inform your content, design, branding, audience specifics, collaborations, and future goals. It will help you grow your blog, audience and reputation. And it will ultimately help you grow your business.

I have found the process of defining my blog’s core purpose incredibly enlightening and inspiring. It gave me a renewed enthusiasm at a time when I was in a bit of a creative rut. And it helped me to focus on what was needed to take my blog to the next level.

I am going to outline below how to define what your blog’s core purpose is. But you can also use this exercise for whatever business or any creative endeavour your are pursuing.

It’s the start of an intensive brainstorming and planning process that I will share with you over the coming weeks, with the intention to help you focus on what your blog truly stands for, how the future of your blog will look, and how to put a plan into action.

Define Blogs Core Purpose

How To Define Your Blog Core Purpose

This exercise is all about the brainstorming, so choose your equipment that best suits your style of thinking. You could use a classic pen and paper approach, or perhaps open up a new Word document or Evernote note. I want you to create a comfortable space where you can focus on your blog, business and the future.

I personally like to use an A4 piece of paper to scribble down as many ideas, words, and sentences as I can in my brainstorming session. I then set it all aside, make a cuppa, then revisit the ideas with a fresh mind to start pulling together what the blog core purpose is.

Answer the following questions and instructions:

1. What does your blog stand for? Write one sentence that capture exactly what your blog is about and/or what it stands for.

2. What do you want your blog to be known for?

3. What do you want people to feel about your blog?  How do you want people to feel after reading your blog?

4. How do you want to feel about your blog?

5. How will reading your blog benefit your audience?

6. What will blogging achieve for you?

7. What are your blog’s goals?

8. What are your blog objectives? Objectives are the steps needed to be taken in order to achieve goals. They can also be statements of intent.

9. What words would you associate with your blog?

10. What is the mission statement for your blog?

The final question should encapsulate all of the ideas the previous questions have inspired.

Write your mission statement

You should be left with a page, or more, filled with specific ideas, objectives and goals about your blog. You need to use these ideas to narrow down exactly what your core purpose is and ideally create a mission statement with it.

That mission statement forms your blog’s core purpose. This should now inform all of your decisions regarding your blog going forwards.

Thinking of branding for your blog? Does it fit with the core purpose?

Thinking of new content for the blog? Does it fit with the core purpose?

Looking for new events or networking opportunities? Does it fit with the core purpose?

Stick to your blog’s core purpose and you will undoubtedly find it easier to make informed and specific decisions from now on.

How did you do? What is your blog’s core purpose?
