My hair went from waist-length to just-below-the-shoulders. This was not intentional. Nope. I went for my annual haircut as a little birthday treat to myself and instead of taking 3 inches off the ends the hairdresser chopped off 6 inches. And my fringe is still wonky.
I’m a little upset about it. OK, not a little, quite a lot.
I have paid good money for this haircut and it was not what I asked for at all. The appointment was rather rushed and I was in shock when I saw it. But what can you say? It’s not like they can put the hair back on. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. And years and years worth of growing my hair and now this…
My hair hasn’t been this short in years. For good reason too. I don’t think I suit short hair and I enjoy feeling my hair on the back of my elbows in the summer. It’s fun to have long hair.
But no, for some reason hairdressers all over the country (and possibly the world) think it is OK to chop off as much as they like. And there isn’t jack we can do it about.
Except not go to the hairdressers, which is what I normally choose to do.
I hate going to the hairdressers.
So not only has my hair been chopped short but my blunt fringe is still at an angle. I don’t understand why. This is the second time in 6 months that a hairdresser has attempted to trim my fringe and it’s been done badly. Last time they chopped too far back into my hair, this time it’s wonky.
Even more upsetting is the poor blow-dry I received afterwards. I was looking forward to big, bouncy, healthy-looking hair ready for my birthday celebrations that evening. But instead I ended up with a flat, lifeless style that looked worse than what I can achieve at home.

I wrote an email to the hairdressers responsible complaining about their service but they have not responded. They don’t care. I am gutted that I have spent £65 of my very limited funds. It has been an utter waste. I might as well have taken the cash out and pushed it down the drain.
What is a girl supposed to do? Do I resign myself to bad haircuts for the rest of my life?
For now I just need to get used to this length and pray that my hair grows back again quickly. Or I need to find some extensions and dye them red.

I also hate hairdressers. I too have very long hair with a blunt fringe (which i trim myself).
For some strange reason just before Christmas I decided that i wanted a change, a little treat to myself. I decided to have some colour put through my long glossy dark brown hair. I took a handful of pictures of the sort of thing i wanted to show my hairdresser.” No problem”, The famous last words! 2 hours later i left the salon with streaks of dirty blonde going through my dried and very damaged hair. How i cried. A few days later I had it all taken out by the same hairdresser after i complained to the manager. A waste of £50!
I still think your hair looks lovely.
Argh! that’s awful. I had something similar a few years ago. was meant to have a few highlights in my hair and ended up with patchy colour. had to go back and they bleached the crap out of my hair.
We’ve all been there
I went in once for a trim and chocolate brown colour and left with a wonky fringe and plum coloured hair, I cried. I complained and had to go back to the same hairdresser to fix it (the Salon owner insisted), it was the last thing I wanted to do and felt so awkward. It’s expensive enough without feeling like you’ve thrown money away for a rubbish do.
Your hair still looks beautiful though, and summer is months away so plenty of time for it to grow.

it’s mental how many hairdressers mess up, eh?
I’ve had my hair cut in a salon once – my godmother does mine! I figured when I moved away for Uni I’d need to go elsewhere to get it trimmed as regularly as I was used to – but they completely messed the cut up and it ended up (surprise, surprise) shorter than I wanted. I wish I had the nerve to cut my own!

I wish I had a godmother to cut mine!
Can you go back in person and complain if they don’t respond? I definitely would. I hate going too, I still haven’t found a good hairdresser I trust in Leeds and we’ve been here 5 years now :/
the hairdresser was in London so not that easy to get back to. darn it.
Aww lady, sorry to hear that. I’m not a fan of going to the hairdresser either. I went as a pre birthday treat last year and ended up with a fringe (which I don’t suit!) that was dyed a different colour to the rest of my hair! When I’d agreed to a bit of ‘softness’ round my face I hadn’t expected an orange fringe! So you’re not alone at all!
The only helpful thing I can say is that your hair still looks lovely to me xx
what? an orange fringe isn’t softness?
Your hair still looks great, although I can understand why you’re so disappointed. That’s an awful
lot of money for something you’re not happy with. They at least owe you free fringe tidies until the time comes when your hair has grown to the desired length for a tiny trim.

Aaaagh! That is the worst thing. I don’t understand why headdresses just cut off more than you asked for. It’ll grow back
plus, it still looks great!!
I really hope they respond – it’s horrible having a hair cut you’re not happy with. But it does really suit you
though I can imagine it will take a bit of getting used to after it being so long

Your hair will always be gorgeous no matter what you do with it!

thank you, Sian!
I appreciate your hair is significantly shorter than you’re used to but in an attempt to say some positive things, I can’t spot that your fringe is wonky (and I understand fringes are prone to growing quickly so it can be dealt with before too long) and your hair isn’t what I would call short at all!
Best thing to have done would have been to have complained while you were there and refused to pay the full price. Unfortunately I don’t think you have much come back now. Not a useful now I know but it might help someone in the future.
Thanks, Vikki. Hopefully it’ll grow out soon enough.
You’re right, I should have told them straight away that I was unhappy. I just didn’t want the drama on my birthday.
I can completely empathise with falling prey to chop-happy hairdressers! A friend of mine claims that the more expensive the hairdresser the more they consider themselves artists above all reproach and don’t listen to what you’re actually asking for. I got married last August and 6 months beforehand a hairdresser’s hand slipped (or so I’m convinced) and he gave me what I can only describe as a choppy 80s rocker do. Anyway, for what it’s worth I still think your hair is lovely! And having just stumbled upon your blog I think it’s equally lovely
Your Paris guide is great too as I’m going there next weekend so I’ve been eagerly jotting down all your recommendations. Looking forward to backtracking through some of your posts and following more upcoming adventures
Thanks very much and welcome to the blog!
Your hair still looks great, you should have refused to pay though! I usually cut my own hair now as I never get what I ask for, at least that way I only have myself to blame

I know, I’m a total weed for not complaining on the spot.
I’ve never had my hair cut at a hairdressers before – I’ve had the same mobile hairdresser who comes to my house to cut my hair since I was born! I have really thin, fine hair so wouldn’t trust anyone who didn’t know what my hair was like not to cut it or style it in a way that wouldn’t make it look disgusting as soon as I wash it for the first time. Plus I’m quite boring with my hair and rarely change its style – most of the people who work in the hairdressers near me seem to change their hairstyles every week! Plus it’s so much cheaper having my hair cut at home than going to a salon, which is perfect as I only graduated fro uni this year and the cash flow situation is still a bit of a problem…

I’m new to reading your blog, but just have to say that I think your new hair looks beautiful, and really suits your face shape. You should definitely consider keeping it that length. X
